The Devil’s Guacamole

by SLY on April 10th, 2010

In an attempt to live a more raw life as it relates to my food intake, I took inspiration from one of my favorite blogs, Raw on $10 a day or less.

When I looked at the recipe I realized, it required mustard and mayo…a raw version. But I wasn’t really feeling those ingredients. Therefore,  I googled guacamole to see what recipes I could find. I found one on Simply Recipes. However I did not have all the ingredients they listed such as cilantro and paprika or the serrano peppers. I decided to do my own take on the recipe.

INGREDIENTS

  • 1 avocado
  • 2 jalapeno peppers
  • 1 whole lime
  • 1/2 of a lemon
  • A sliver of a little bell pepper
  • A chunk of some onion
  • salt
  • pepper
  • A small  tomato

PREPARATION

  • Cut the avocado. (Apparently you can use the pit for a shake. Found that out on the Raw Vegan Recipe Exchange.)
  • Mash it up in a bowl with a fork
  • Chop and add in the bell pepper, onion and jalapeno to taste.
  • Squeeze a whole lime and half a lemon.
  • Mash everything up as chunky or smooth as you like it.
  • Taste and test it and add whatever is missing.
  • Once you are ready to serve, add the chopped tomatoes.

(Photo is blurry on purpose since I take horrible photos of food.)

Check it out. I did it. I made a raw dish! It was easy, cheap, and OH SO TASTY. If every raw dish is like this, going raw will be no problem for me!

Why “The Devil’s Guacamole?” Two reasons, one its based off of a recipe called “Deviled Avocados” and if you know me, you’d know that having a ration of ONE avocado to TWO jalapenos is ONLY the beginning. My spicy tolerance is so high I could swallow a bit of hell. Next time, I’m going to add a third pepper and a bit of hot shot, which is my favorite seasoning.

Let me tell you, over the past year, I’ve come to slightly abhor guacamole and avocado. However, the Spice Market..my favorite restaurant that I have yet to do a review on, redeemed the avocado for me. And up until last night, nothing redeemed guacamole.

In the past, the types I’ve tried have been WAY to chunky or WAY to mashed up. Only after adding as much stuff as I did, did I realize that the past guacamoles I’ve tried have also been tasteless, basically. My guacamole was so flavorful for me that I ate it by its self. And yes, I liked the plate and liked my fingers.

The meal was simple. It could be used for breakfast, lunch, or dinner and it was pretty cheap to make. I’m so excited to try more meals from Raw on $10 a day or less!

Have you prepared any raw dishes this week? How do you like your guacamole? Chunky? Smooth? Bland? Flavorful? Is it weird that I didn’t even bother with chips or anything and just ate it by itself? Please tell me, you’ve done that before too. :)
