Twitter Theology: The Context of the Bible
Someone’s twitter update. “On homosexuality/pride parades/anti Prop 8 & the like: “The wicked freely strut about when what is vile is honored among men.” Psalm 12:8 Someone I USED to follow reweeted this. This is also the same someone who I dialogued with in “Twitter Theology: The Limitations of God.”
I love how the originator tacked on anyone who is same sex oriented or supports their cause in celebrations like parades or by legal and civil rights. That scripture above doesn’t even say anything specific about same sex orientation. Unfortunately many Christians are apt to take the bible out of context, only use the scriptures that apply to them, and completely misuse them in a way that their Christ never would!

That scripture would apply to anyone who “sins.” So to the author of that tweet and the person who retweeted it, because you sin everyday…you are vile and wicked too, fyi.
When “sinners” were with Jesus in these biblical myths, he did not yell out to them, ‘You vile and wicked person.”….He dined with them, broke bread with them, let them wash his feet. Yet today, I see these unconscious Christians using an outdated bible to mask their ignorance and uncomfortability.
I try to work on grace. I really do. But I definitely mount my soapbox when I see such mistreatment and verbal/written abuse. When I see Christians act like this towards same sex oriented people, its like seeing a KKK member speak vile things to people of African or Caribbean descent. It’s like seeing ignorance and hate on full display. It’s like seeing the Crusaders kill innocent people in the name of god.

Using that scripture was out of context and definitely not done in love! Didn’t God command in the bible that you should love him and love others? Where is the love? God did not command you to judge or misuse the bible to suit your needs.
Why am I saying this, I know I can’t talk sense to people like this.
My friend Matt wrote this on facebook once. Thank god for Christians like him.
….. In time, parts of the Bible become culturally insignificant or completely ignored.. and these shifts will continue to happen over time as people’s popular opinion or awareness shifts. Otherwise, what do we do with verses like these:
11 Women should learn in silence and all humility. 12 I do not allow them to teach or to have authority over men; they must keep quiet.
1 Timothy 2:11-12
9 Nor was man created for woman’s sake, but woman was created for man’s sake. 10 On account of the angels, then, a woman should have a covering over her head to show that she is under her husband’s authority.
1 Corinthians 11:9-10
34 the women should keep quiet in the meetings. They are not allowed to speak; as the Jewish Law says, they must not be in charge. 35 If they want to find out about something, they should ask their husbands at home. It is a disgraceful thing for a woman to speak in a church meeting.
1 Corinthians 14:34-35
A lot of verses in the Bible are used/abused by people to control others and convince them to think a certain way even when it goes against our sense of fairness/common sense. That’s my biggest ongoing problem with Christianity.
So the girl who tweeted nonsense, your same bible tells you to learn in silence. For the sake of all things holy, please be quiet.
I’m not saying everyone needs to go out and participate in the latest pride parade. We don’t all have to agree on same sex orientation in regards to whether its a sin. But celebrating their love and giving them civil, human and legal rights…if you are against that, you truly are a vile being.
As mentioned in Soap Box: Same Sex Orientation
I won’t say fuck the christians today.
What I will say..to any same sex oriented person…i hope you have enough people in your life supporting you. NOTHING IS WRONG with your love. God loves you. The REAL GOD LOVES YOU. If you ever need an encouraging word, email me. Call me. YOU are SACRED, HOLY, BEAUTIFUL.
