Happy Birthday Hanna

by SLY on December 31st, 2010

On December 26th, 2010 my little sister Hanna turned 12 years old.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY HANNA!!!!!

I have always felt a deep connection with my sister Hanna. While we are vastly different when it comes to style…she being far better than me…. we have similar interest in creativity, the arts, cooking and sometimes a melancholy disposition. She’s a happy child, don’t get me wrong. Just watch her when she’s dancing or talking about art or singing or painting or shopping…but she also has this sarcastic bite to her. Something I have as well. I love that about her.

Hanna is a girl’s girl. She loves shopping. She loves pretty things. She loves Hollywood glamor. She loves Vogue magazine, beautiful hair styles, pretty shoes and lots and lots of shiny, glittery things. There is no one in our family like her. Her sense of style is so profound that when my mother is dressing for important occasions, she consults with Hanna. Hanna knows the right shoes and the right accessories. She’s just intuitively clever when it comes to style.

I remember looking at a picture of her from a few years ago. She was in a cooking demo at school and the kids were making pasta and red sauce. All the kids in the photo had on t-shirts, shorts, khakis…typical kid stuff. Hanna…She had on glitter jeans, kick ass boots and this white sweater with a faux fur hood. The sweater was elaborate. And it was white. And they were cooking pasta with red sauce. From the picture it looked like the kids all had blotches of sauce on them. Hanna was handling her business. Cooking a wonderful dish with not a splash of sauce on her amazing sweater. She’s just like that.

While Hanna has aspirations to be a singer and dancer, I can also very well see her be a stylist and a model. She takes pictures like no other. I love the emotions she convey. I love the slight tilt of her head. I love her body language. My sister is so gorgeous, so creative, SO VERY WONDERFUL!

Hanna, my love, thank you for being my sister. For always keeping me in check and making sure my boots match the color of my belts.  Thank you for reminding me there’s joy in all those girly things. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with adorning yourself in glitter, if the spirit moves you. Or cooking in high heels, if you feel like it. Or drinking milk from a martini glass or champagne flute, just because it makes you feel good.

THAT IS EXACTLY WHAT I LOVE ABOUT HER. She’s completely okay with taking indulgences in the luxuries that make her happy. Not in a selfish way. She just knows what makes her feel good and she has no problem doing those things. If she wants to drink water out of a champagne flute because it makes her feel “fancy”, then so be it. Don’t knock her style. If she wants to pour a bucket of glitter all over herself. Then let her.

Now, sure some of her tendencies need some development…she likes to shop without looking at the price tag. o_O But, all in all, I love that she knows how to satisfy herself. Whether it be with reading a good book, drawing a beautiful picture, cooking pasta or putting on lip gloss. She constantly reminds me its ok to be a girl and to take luxuries every now and then.

Happy Birthday Hanna. May every last one of your wonderful dreams come true. I know sometimes I’m hard on you but that’s only because I love you so. I want the world for you. And I’d break in half saving and loving you. You are my heart, dear sweet child. Always know that!

I also wrote about Hanna here. I think its imperative that we take the time to tell children how much we adore them and in this letter, I poured my heart out to my sister. Please do this to the people that you love. An Open Letter to My Heart

I also interviewed Hanna and you can check that video out here. –>  Hanna LaShay interview video.
