Lull of the Moon on my Spirit

by SLY on January 5th, 2011

I wish I could feel obvious effects of the moon upon my being. Just as I can literally feel the SUN god touching my skin, I wish the same could be said for the moon. I suppose there is something to say for the fact that one of its meanings is tied to subtlety. There is a mystery there. A shadow. A slight lull that pulls and beckons but is probably just above a whisper.

This New Moon of the new year excites me. While I don’t count my time according to January 1st…my time is divided by the seasons and other elemental occurences within nature, by my birth date and by a yearly assessment in June…I still enjoy the timing of it all. Right now, not one planet is in retrograde. THANK GOODESS. Mercury and Venus were going to be the death of me. For the next few weeks, I can take pleasure in the fact that they all are moving directly.

I can also use this time of the new moon to take an intentional approach to birthing my primal desires and urges. Fresh ideas, projects, and friendships are only the start. I’m unabashedly submitting myself to nature. I’m letting this elemental alignment give me the courage to boldly begin again.

Some people are disheartened with the prospect of beginning again or even starting at all. I personally delight in it. It’s an adaptive process because this cycle happens over and over again, whether that be weekly, monthly, yearly or via other means of calculating progress. Time isn’t the only way to measure these cycles.

While I acknowledge and even form rituals around the Full Moon, I think I’m going to start forming a ritual around the new moon too! I foresee a simple ceremony that involves lighting candles, focusing on my monthly symbolism and taking the time to articulate the birth of any ideas, creativity and etcetera that comes to mind, body or spirit.

Do you know that on the inside of my left wrist I actually have a crescent moon tattoo with an eight point star? (Learn about that symbolism because many judgements are made! The assumptions crack me up or baffle me) This tattoo is not a fashion trend, drunken mistake, or cute form of body art. There was intention set behind the symbol. The location. The color. And the addition of a star. I want to be intentional about acknowledging this on a monthly basis. Something of which I don’t do currently.

I wonder if the moon has any symbolic meaning associated with death.  Perhaps its just in the darkness and shadows. This will be something to explore in my temporarily, ill titled performance piece, “The Death Play.”

The effects of the moon on water astound me. Also, we have only one moon and we have so many rituals and meaning surrounding that. I can’t imagine if we occupied another planet that have 7 or 20 or countless ones.

For some reason all of this “moon symbolism” googling, led me to looking up my birth chart again. I once considered tattooing the entirety of my birth chart on my back! Yikes! While I’ve disregarded that idea over the course of the next few years, my back will be completely covered but with something else. (Stay tuned for that!)

While I have a very specific way in which I associate with symbolism, astrology, runes, tarot cards and so forth, I still believe they maintain some level of power. If you approach these things on a metaphysical level, you’ll see beyond your initial scope. I personally believe the alignment of the Sun, Moon, Planet and Stars at your time of birth is significant. It may not necessarily determine the specifics details of your entire life but I believe it does hold special meaning. While researching the new moon, I decided to check out my birth chart since I couldn’t remember my Moon Sign. We all know, my Sun sign is LEO!

My birth chart is below. It’s helpful to know the exact time that you were born. Turns out my Moon sign is Pisces. I know very little about that, so I’ll be doing some more investigating.

If you like to focus on being attuned to nature and its effects and meaning, I encourage you to pay attention to the cycles of the moon. Find ritual. Set intentions. And take note of when you and nature are one.
