Choosing Magic over Dread | Musings on the Rain

Tuesday, May 22nd, 2012

What if you chose gratefulness instead? What if you chose to see the magic?

"Sheena LaShay"

I walked into a meeting recently and as everyone sat down, I overheard, “Isn’t it just dreadful outside?” Someone else nodded in agreement. “Its wet and grey. Its just so nasty.” Then a number of people seconded the motion.

I don’t associate rainwater with dread and nastiness. It is dreadful that some areas experience drought. It is nasty that some people have so little, that sometimes they have to capture rain water just to have something to drink.

However, rain itself, is glorious, life giving and purifying.

What if you choose to view things differently? What if your day didn’t begin with a complaint but a heart full of gratitude?

I am grateful every time it rains.

1. Rainwater washes the grim away.

2. Rainwater reminds me to release. (I share about releasing HERE)

3. Raindrops bring me to my childhood. (I explain the rain story HERE and HERE. )

4. Rainwater shows me that the world is still in relative good working order.

5. I look forward to everything that will grow.

Dreadful is relative. Actually, dreadful is your own projection. Nature is neither good or bad. Nature is not moral or emotional. It is full of balance, cycles and pure wonder. I love when it rains. It’s absolutely glorious.

"Sheena LaShay"Consider shifting your prespective on all things that are so “dreadful” in your life. When you change your relationship to these things, concepts and even rain water, you may find your day has completely changed.

Peacocks | I don’t think we’re on Wall Street anymore

"Sheena LaShay"

A gorgeous picture of an adult male peacock at the Devish Center.

My silent retreat at the Dervish Center has physically come to an end. My time there was rejuvenating, inspirational and full of stillness. I look forward to sharing my thoughts & experiences, my photography and videography as well as some of my doodles & discoveries.

As I reintegrate myself back into life and Wall Street and stage manager booths and stillettos heels as I learn new pole tricks, I will come back to this space as well.

In the meantime, I’m actively conversing on twitter (@SheenaLaShay) and facebook. (SheenaLaShay or SociologyofSheena).

One of my favorite moments throughout my time at the Dervish Center was the ability to have intimate, close relationships with the peacocks in terms of proximity. They walked right beside us.  It was incredible. I would watch them for long periods of time. That’s all I did.

I didn’t think about anything. I didn’t go through my to do list. I didn’t make notes. Most often, I didn’t even take pictures. I would just take five minutes to watch the peacock clean his feathers or walk up the stairs or turn his neck this way and that. It was beautiful, peaceful and oh so very zen.

One I turned down the path and there were two teenage boy peacocks in full bloom having a conversation with each other. I remember thinking, “I’m not on Wall Street right now. This most definitely isn’t a pigeon!”

Today, I challenge you to find a marvel, whether it be a flower, a raindrop or a book. Bask in stillness in its uniqueness. Simply, be present with the marvel. Even if the marvel is your own reflection, a red velvet cupcake or perhaps you’ll happen upon a peacock, like I did.

Full Sprouting Grass Moon

Saturday, April 7th, 2012

"Sheena LaShay"On Friday, April 6, 2012 we entered into the April Full Sprouting Grass Moon. This moon also goes by a few other names, the Pink Moon, the Egg Moon and the Fish Moon. This full moon also coincides with the perigean spring tide.

I believe sometimes one needs to find a clearing in the forest. Stand beneath the stars and the full bright moon. Then let your mind wander. Think about what’s up there and how it all moves and stays in its perfect place. Complete perfect alignment. Let yourself be lulled by the magic of the moon. It is absolutely beautiful and stunning. That is exactly what I did last night.
