I was watching a show where one woman was extremely cruel to another one. When asked if she felt her behavior was acceptable, wrong or what she thought it general, her response was, “Hey, at least I’m owning it.”
“Owning it” isn’t simply acknowledging your actions and reveling in them. I see this on tv, in conversations and interactions with people. The phrase usually surfaces in moments of confrontation, either during or after.
Sometimes the phrases, “keeping it real” or “that’s just me” are cousined with the overused phrase of “owning it.”
I believe that “Owning It” means seeing yourself CLEARLY and HONESTLY with careful intentions, compassion, grace and understanding. I see people use it out of spite and justification for hurtful actions and ill thought out discourse.
I think about the idea of OWNING something. A book. A home. An item. When we own something, we invest ourselves in it, whether it be through money, time or etcetera. Because we have invested our selves into that specific thing, we treat it preciously and with respect. We take care of it.
OWN – belonging to oneself
It should also be noted, according to me, that OWNING UP TO something is different than OWNING IT. They require different postures. Owning your self is living in confidence and love knowing that you are a part of this world, along with everyone else. It means you understand your worthiness and that of the collective consciousness and nature too. Owning up to something is admitting where you messed up, rectifying the situation and reconciling the brokenness.
When you fuck up and chalk one up to your self for at the very least “Owning It”, you’re gloating in your own shit and it’s so beside the point. That’s not “owning it.” Most people just call it, “jack ass behavior.”
Just saying.
